Harokopio University of Athens (HUA) is a public university dedicated to promoting research and learning in a small, well focused set of intellectual areas.
The university, situated in the centre of Athens and close to the Unesco World Heritage Centre of the Acropolis, originates from an educational institution that was first established in 1929 and gained the status of University in 1990. It takes its name from the national benefactor Panagis Harokopos. The University’s excellent campus facilities house four academic departments. The design and overall development of the University has been based on international standards and on scientific research.
The department involved in TORNADO is the Department of Informatics and Telematics. It was founded in 2006 with a mission to advance Computer Science, primarily in the field of web/telematic applications, big data, machine learning and networking. The Department places strong emphasis on application domains such as internet technologies, digital transformation, e-business, e-government, e-health, advanced transport telematics, etc.
HUA’s TORNADO team is part of HUA CV group, a research group at the Department of Informatics and Telematics that focuses on artificial intelligence and machine/deep learning, particularly in computer vision technologies. HUA CV group includes faculty, undergraduate, MSc, PhD, and post-doc members, along with personnel involved in other R&D projects.
HUA, as leader of WP5, T5.1, T5.4, and T4.1 in the TORNADO project, specializes in AI algorithms for computer vision, focusing on adapting Foundation Models, few-shot learning, and explainable AI. HUA will develop advanced algorithms for object detection, 3D pose estimation, face recognition, and SLAM, leveraging pretrained models.
