The Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of FORTH, established in 1988, is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with highly specialised expertise in the fields of Human-Computer Interaction and Ambient Intelligence.

The HCI Lab conducts leading research activities that emphasize human-computer interaction as a fundamental aspect of developing various types of ICT applications and services.

The lab’s focus areas include Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, User Experience Design along with its associated methods and tools, Extended Reality Environments, and Interaction in Intelligent Environments.
Additionally, the lab engages in applied research across several domains, ensuring a comprehensive approach to enhancing user interactions and experiences with technology.

In the context of the TORNADO project, the HCI Laboratory of ICS-FORTH is leading the assessment activities regarding the societal impact of the project’s technologies, considering factors such as social inclusiveness, quality of life, and environmental effects, proceeding with an inclusive analysis to identify risks and opportunities, emphasising societal acceptability and trust, with assessments conducted across project phases. Furthermore, it will implement the Human State Analyzer mechanism for human behaviour analysis, modelling and anticipation.
