Pioneering Adaptive Robotics for Real-World Applications

Athens, January 31st, 2025 – The TORNADO project, a Horizon Europe granted R&I project aimed at developing an advanced cloud-based robotics platform, officially launched its activities during a two-day consortium meeting held in Athens on January 29th and 30th. Representatives from all 14 project partnersrepresenting 9 EU countries, 7 research organizations, 4 for-profit entities and technology providers, and 3 end-users came together to align strategies, define priorities, and plan actions for the first six months of this groundbreaking project.

TORNADO is set to revolutionize the field of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) by equipping them with the ability to navigate dynamic indoor environments, interact naturally with humans, and handle complex objects, including soft and deformable items. The platform will be powered by cutting-edge deep learning models hosted on the cloud, ensuring the robot can adapt quickly to changing situations and acquire new skills on the spot when needed.

“TORNADO’s innovative approach integrates adaptive machine learning, human feedback, and dynamic cognitive systems to enable robots to perform non-repetitive tasks with precision and flexibility,”

explained Dr George BRAVOS, Director of R&D,  ITML and Project Coordinator.

“This capability opens up new possibilities for robotics in a variety of industries and real-world applications.”

The project will test and validate its technology across three key use cases:

  • Gears Factory: Manipulation of small gears and flexible materials.
  • Hospital Environment: Assistance in palliative patient care.
  • Plant – Distribution center: Product quality control and waste collection.

During the meeting, partners emphasized the importance of close collaboration and the integration of novel subsystems such as Learning from Demonstration and Explainable AI (XAI) to ensure seamless robot adaptation and human-robot trust. The project’s goal is to reach Technology Readiness Level 5 (TRL-5) within the next phase of development.

As the project gains momentum, TORNADO is expected to push the boundaries of robotics, paving the way for more versatile and human-friendly machines in industrial, healthcare, and manufacturing settings.
